Regulation in Ontario
On April 1, 2015 in Ontario, the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario was created. Psychotherapists (including me) are now know as Registered Psychotherapists, which is a protected title and only members of this College can use this designation.
Regulation ensures that all psychotherapists meet certain standards of education and experience. Regulation also provide a context for any complaints and mechanisms for resolving them.
Until now, psychotherapy was entirely unregulated in Ontario. There were no standards at all for education, training and experience. All regulatory processes bring new issues, but on the whole, this will ensure that people seeking help in Ontario can do so with more confidence that their interests are being protected.
